Contains five Seif.

One who vows or swears by the name of idols is liable to lashes. It is forbidden to mention their name, whether for a purpose or not:

The names of their holidays, which are like the names of people, may be mentioned. However, one should not call them as the idolaters do, with a tone of reverence. (Mordechai, end of Avodah Zarah, in the name of Ra'avyah and Hagahot Maimoni and R. Yerucham):

It is forbidden to cause an idolater to vow or swear by the name of idols. (See Orach Chaim, Siman 156, and Choshen Mishpat, end of Siman 176):

It is permitted to mention the names of idols that are written in the Torah, such as "Bel bows down, Nebo stoops" (Isaiah 46:1), "who prepare a table for Gad" (Isaiah 65:11):

It is permitted to mock idols:

Rema: It is permitted to say to an idolater, "May your god help you" or "May he grant success to your endeavors" (Rambam in his commentary on the Mishnah):

שלא להשביע בשם אלילים של עובדי כוכבים ודיני הזכרת שמה

ובו חמישה סעיפים:

סעיף א

הנודר או נשבע בשם אלילים הרי זה היה לוקה. ואסור להזכירה בשמה, בין לצורך בין שלא לצורך:

סעיף ב

שם חגים שלהם שהם כשמות בני אדם -- אין חשש להזכירם. והוא שלא יקראם כמו שמזכירם אותם העובדי כוכבים בלשון חשיבות. (מרדכי ספ"ק דעבודת כוכבים בשם ראבי"ה והגה' מיימוני ור' ירוחם):

סעיף ג

אסור לגרום לעובד כוכבים שידור או שישבע בשם אלילים. (ועיין בא"ח סימן קנ"ו ובחושן משפט סוף סימן קע"ו):

סעיף ד

מותר להזכיר שם אלילים הכתובים בתורה כמו "כרע בל קורס נבו" (ישעיהו מו, א), "העורכים לגד שולחן" (ישעיהו סה, יא):

סעיף ה

מותר להתלוצץ באלילים:

הגה: מותר לומר לעובד כוכבים אלהיך יהיה בעזרך או יצליח מעשיך (רמב"ם בפי' המשנה):
