Translation:Shulchan Aruch/Orach Chaim/297
297: Laws of Spices for Havdalah. Contains 5 seifim.
1 One recites a blessing over the spices, if one has. And if one does not have, one does not need to go around after them.
2 We do not recite a blessing over spices of the bathroom, and not over those of the deceased (and specifically) those which are placed on top of the bed of the deceased, and not over spices that are at a gathering of heathens, because the presumption is that their gathering is for idol worship. Gloss: And if one recited a blessing over these spices, he has not fulfilled the obligation, and he needs to go back and recite a blessing on others [Beis Yosef in the name of Orchot Chayim].
3
Sacks full of spices that heathens place inside the pitchers of wine, even though it is permitted to smell them, we do not recite Havdalah over them.
4
It is customary to recite a blessing over the myrtle whenever possible.
Gloss: And there are those who say that one should not recite a blessing over a myrtle that's dried out, for it does not emit an odor, but rather over other spices (Tur in the name of Rabbi Ephraim and Rabbi A. of Prague) and such is the custom in these countries. And it seems to me that one should also place myrtle with the spices, for then, they do like the whole world.
5 One who does not smell does not recite the blessing over the spices unless his intent is to fulfill the obligation on behalf of the members of his household who are minors, who have reached the age when they are to be trained, or to do fulfill the obligation for one who does not know.
