Translation:Shulchan Aruch/Orach Chaim/274

274: Laws of Breaking the Bread on Shabbos. Contains 4 seifim.

1 One breaks bread on two [whole] loaves; that one holds them both in his hand and breaks the bottom one. Gloss: And specifically on the night of Shabbat [his own words]. However, on the Shabbat day, or on the night of Yom Tov, we break the top one [Kol Bo; and Hagahos Maimoni, Chapter 8 of the Laws of Leavened and Unleavened Bread] and the reason is according to the Kabbalah.

2 It is a mitzvah on Shabbat to break a big piece that will last one through the whole meal [and see above, Siman 167].

3 Those reclining may not partake until the one breaking bread partakes. And if there are two loaves before each one, they could partake even though he has not yet partaken.

4 This meal, and the one of the morning, cannot be done without bread.
