The Strand Magazine/1893

Highlights

This year sees the conclusion of several serials, but Shafts from an Eastern Quiver was overshadowed undoubtedly by the final set of Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, leading to the dramatic ending in the December issue.

The start of Volume 5 sees the first in the long-running series of Parliamentary sketches, From Behind the Speaker's Chair, by Henry W. Lucy, covering the characters of the current parliament as well as stories of parliamentarians of old (which for the time meant the mid-19th century).

The start of Volume 6 sees the start of Stories from the Diary of a Doctor, by L. T. Meade and Clifford Halifax, over twelve parts and a sequel series in future issues. This follows the career of Dr. Halifax as he gets involved in a series of events, each connected with some malady or medical condition.

One individual article of interest is Future Dictates of Fashion, by W. Cade Gall, which occasionally attracts interest from people who misinterpret the drawings as a serious prediction of future fashion.
