The New International Encyclopædia/Diogenes of Apollonia

DIOGENES OF APOLLO′NIA. A Greek philosopher, a pupil of Anaximenes and a contemporary of Anaxagoras, who flourished in Athens in the first half of the fifth century B.C. He believed air to be the source of all being, and all other substances to be derived from it by condensation and rarefaction. He also recognized an intelligent principle, but did not distinguish between mind and matter. Consult Zeller, Philosophie der Griechen, vol. i. (Leipzig, 1892).
