The New International Encyclopædia/Diocles (demagogue)

DIOCLES (Lat., from Gk. Διοκλῆς, Dioklēs). A Syracusan demagogue of the fourth century B.C., noted for his code of laws. He was a democratic leader, and his code, which continued in force until the Roman Conquest, tended to popular sovereignty. His failure to bury the dead, after his vain attempt to raise the siege of Himera, resulted in his banishment in B.C. 408.
