The Golden Darkness/Premonition
PREMONITION.
When darkness like a sea
Swims in among the stars,
And I am filled with strangeness,
With wild mysterious fears,
I plead deep, deep in me
With all the gods who bless
This world with light and beauty,—
Or any god that hears,—
That I may watch a while
A dawn with gold clouds flying,
And walk a country mile
And see a human face,
Before my soul goes crying
Through the waste loneliness
Of weird and starless space. . . .
Swims in among the stars,
And I am filled with strangeness,
With wild mysterious fears,
I plead deep, deep in me
With all the gods who bless
This world with light and beauty,—
Or any god that hears,—
That I may watch a while
A dawn with gold clouds flying,
And walk a country mile
And see a human face,
Before my soul goes crying
Through the waste loneliness
Of weird and starless space. . . .
