"Dear Tommy [Norton], Well here's your beautiful sister-in-law adding to the many other people and wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Guess what? I received a letter from Jonnie Burke about two weeks ago and boy am I glad he isn't dead. Last night he phoned me from Newport, Rhode Island and invited me to the commissioning of his ship. It is to take place in three more days at Brooklyn Naval Yard. My mother said it was alright so I am going. Wait until you hear what a good girl I have been. Every night I have gotten in around 10:30 for about a month. You ought to put that on believe it or not. Well I'm coming along just wonderful at work. I have gained six pounds since I started. Today my boss gave me the day off for Christmas shopping and mother and I went to New York. Boy I'm sure tired. Wait until you see my new coat. Its a white bunny coat. I'm wearing when I go out with Johnnie. Today my father came while mom and I were to New York and he bought us another big Christmas tree. Boy my mother is going crazy. Well Tommy I can't think of anything else so I'll knock off. Love Helen."
