Charles Eric Maine is a British author, now aged 36. A science-fiction fan of pre-war days, he served as a Signals Officer in the Royal Air Force during the war. His first success as a writer came in 1952 when his radio play Spaceways was a hit on the BBC, and subsequently was turned into a novel, a magazine serial, a motion picture, and a television drama. Other novels followed, among which are Timeliner, The Isotope Man, Escapement, Crisis 2000, High Vacuum, and The Man Who Couldn't Sleep. His work has appeared in both hard covers and paperbacks, and has been translated into Italian, Spanish, and Swedish.

He describes World Without Men as the book which he most enjoyed writing.
