No. 4617. PROTOCOL[1] BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC CONCERNING SETTLEMENT OF THE QUESTION OF THE ACCOUNTS ESTABLISHED AT THE YOKOHAMA SPECIE BANK IN THE NAME OF THE BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE (BANK OF INDOCHINA). SIGNED AT TOKYO, ON 27 MARCH 1957

The Government of Japan and the Government of the French Republic,

Desiring to arrive at a final settlement of the question pending between them concerning the accounts established at the Yokohama Specie Bank in the name of the Banque de l'Indochine,

Have agreed as follows:

1. (a) The Government of Japan shall pay to the Government of the French Republic, not later than 31 March 1957, the equivalent in pounds sterling of 1,500 million yen and the sum of $US 479,651.

(b) The amounts in pounds sterling payable in accordance with sub-paragraph (a) above shall be determined by the cable selling rate of the pound sterling quoted on the date of payment by the banks authorized to act as agents in Japan.

2. Once the payments referred to in the preceding paragraph have been made, the Government of the French Republic undertakes to make no further claim against the Government of Japan with respect to the accounts established at the Yokohama Specie Bank in the name of the Banque de l'Indochine.

3. This Protocol shall enter into force on the date of its signature.

In witness whereof the representatives of both countries, being duly authorized by their respective Governments, have signed this Protocol.

Done at Tokyo, in duplicate, in the Japanese and French languages, both texts being equally authentic, on 27 March 1957.
