ORDER IN COUNCIL EXTENDING THE TIME AND VARYING THE MANNER OF EXCHANGE OF PRE-VICTORIAN GOLD COINS.

At the Court at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, the 8th day of February 1890.

PRESENT:

The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Wheras by the Coinage Act, 1889,[1] it is enacted as follows:

"Any gold coin of the realm coined before the reign of He present Majesty which is below the least current weight as provided by the Coinage Act, 1870,[2] may, within the time and in the manner from time to time directed by Her Majesty the Queen in Council, be tendered for exchange, and if it has not been illegally dealt with, shall (notwithstanding anything in section seven of the Coinage Act, 1870) be exchanged or paid for by or on behalf of the Mint at its nominal value.

"For the purpose of this Act a gold coin shall be deemed to have been illegally dealt with where the coin has been impaired, diminished or lightened otherwise than by fair wear and tear, or has been defaced by having any name, word, device, or number stamped thereon, whether the coin has or has not been there by diminished or lightened."

And whereas by an Order in Council of the thirteenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine[3] directions were given as to the time and manner in which coins were to be tendered for exchange in pursuance of the said Act;

And where as it is expedient to extend the time and vary the manner;

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, in pursuance of the said Act and of all other powers enabling Her Majesty in this behalf, is pleased to order, and it is here by ordered, as follows:—

1. The time within which any coin mentioned in section one of the Coinage Act, 1889, may be tendered for exchange shall be the thirty-first day of March next.

2. The manner in which any coin mentioned in the Coinage Act, 1889, may be tendered with a view to being exchanged or paid for at its nominal value shall be as follows, namely:


  1. 52 & 53 Vict. c. 58.
  2. 33 & 34 Vict. c. 10.
