part to walk even the few yards to his lodgings. When the sky looked more threatening than usual Ramesh was invited to Hemnalini's room to partake of a break- fast of kedgeree, or a supper of fried dainties, accord- ing to the time of day. The anxiety that was felt about his lungs evidently did not extend to his diges- tion.
And so the young people spent day after day wrapped up in their emotions. What the outcome would be was a question that Ramesh never faced; but Annada Babu did face it, and his friends and relations found it an absorbing topic. Ramesh's worldly wis- dom was not equal to his erudition, and his infatua- tion made his outlook on mundane matters cloudier than ever. Annada Babu was always scanning his face expectantly but he found no response there.
