"I haven't seen you for a long time, Ramesh Babu," he remarked. "Where have you been all these days?"

Ramesh saw no reason for further concealment

"I went to practise in Ghazipur," he answered.

"Are you going to make your home there?"

"No, I don't mean to settle down there after all. I haven't decided where to go next"

Ramesh was not long gone when Akshav arrived. When Jogendra left Calcutta he had requested Akshay to visit the house occasionally during the family's absence.

Akshay never neglected a duty that he had under- taken, and he made a practice of dropping in at odd times to see that one or other of the two bearers was duly guarding the premises.

Chandra Mohan greeted him with the remark, "Ramesh Babu was here a few minutes ago; he has just left"

Akshay. "Really? What did he want here?"

Chandra. "I don't know: I gave him all the in- formation I could about the family. He looked SO ill that I couldn't recognise him at first. It was only when he called for the bearer and I heard his voice that I spotted who it was."

Akshay. "Did you find out where he's staying now?"

Chandra, "He has been at Ghazipur all this time. He has left the place now and hasn't decided where he's going to live."

"0h," said Akshay, and turned his attention to his own business.

Ramesh returned to his lodgings, musing as he went:
