something interior or superior which so determines the mind. It is the same with the power of understanding and volition; they are impossible from any other than Him who has in Himself the power of volition and understanding.
From which it is plain that the two faculties called rationality and liberty are from the Lord and not from man. And since they are from the Lord, it follows that man has of himself no volition and no understanding; they only seem to be from himself. (D. P. 73-88.)
