new story. While not so distinctively a summer novel as the author's earlier venture, it is yet far re moved from the dreary field of novels with a purpose. The thread of the story is simple; but the deepest

interest attaches to Alma, with her undisciplined -na ture, her romantic longings, and her girlish follies. For the last, however, she "pays the price," as Kil- . dare would say.
