2. EUPHEMIA, suo jure COUNTESS PALATINE OF ЕСРПЕМІА, STRATHERNE and COUNTESS OF CAITHNESS [S.] only da. and h., b. before 1375. She resigned, after 1390, being then unmarried, the Earldom of Caithness [S.] to her uncle Walter (STEWART), EARL OF ATHOLL [S. She m. before Dec. 1406, Patrick GRAHAM, who in her right, became EARL OF STRATHERNE [S.] He was treacherously killed at Crieff by his br.-in-law, Sir John Drummond, 10 Aug. 1413. The date of the death of the Countess, who was living in 14106, is not known.
XIV. 1413 ? to 1423.
3. MALISE (GRAHAM), EARL OF STRATHERNE [S.], only 8. and h. He was, under that designation, one of the Hostages for the release of James I [S.] by the treaty of 4 Dec. 1423. By the Parl. of 1424 he was divested of his Earldom (probably in 1425) on pretence of its being a male fee.[1] He was, however, cr. EARL OF MENTEITHÍ [8] (a dignity which had been forfeited in May 1425) obtaining charter thereof, 6 Sep. 1127. See "MENTEITH," Earldom of [S.], cr. 1427.
XV. 1427, to 1137.
1. WALTER (STEWART), EARL OF ATNOLL, &c. [S.], was, on 22 July 1127, er. EARL PALATINE OF STRATHEŘNĚ [S.] for life. He was great uncle of the deprived Earl, being yr. br. of David, Earl of Stratherne [S.] in 1371. and yst s. of ROBERT II. [S.] formerly Earl of Stratherne [S] He was executed for treason in April 1437,when his titles and estates became forfeited. See fuller account under "ATHOLE" Earldom of [S], cr. 1109; forfeited 1437. [By Act of Parl. [S.] 4 Aug. 1455 the EARLDOM (i.e., the territorial Earldom] OF STRATHERNE was annexed to the Crown.]

XVI. 1631, to 1633.
2. WILLIAM (GRAHAM), EARL OF MENTEITH [S.], suc. his father in that dignity in 1598, being 7th in descent from Malise, EARL OF MENTEITH and, sometime (1413-25), EARL OF STRATHERNE [S.] abovenamed. He obtained a patent 31 July 1631, ratifying and approving "to him and his heirs male and of entail" the style of EARL OF STRATHERNE AND MENTEITH [S.]. This patent, however, as well as the refour on which it was founded (which found the Earl to be heir of David, er. EARL OF STRATHERNE, in 1371) was "reduced" by the Court of Session 22 May 1633, and the Earl and his heirs were ordained "to be called in all times coming EARLS OF AIRTH [S.] See fuller particulars under "MENTEITH "Earldom of [S.], cr. 1427. i.e., "CUMBERLAND AND STRATHEARN" Dukedom; see under "CUMBERLAND," Dukedom of, er. 1766; ex. 1790.
- r2 (b) The "Stratherne" here mentioned is not the ancient district in co. Perth, but one in co. Moray, now called STRATHDEAN. See Exch. Rolls [S.], VI, preface, p. cvij. The charter of 17 April 1611. changing the line of succession to the dignities of the Earldom of Moray, &c., granted to the then Earl "tutas et integras Comitatum et dominum de Murray, dominium de Abernethy et Dominium de Stratherne," being a late example of a Charter obviously intended to grant diguities as well as lands.
