He m. Julian, da. of Roger DE CLIFFORD. He d. sp. (1297), 25 Ed I.. when the Barony because artinet. 1. ROBERT DE MONTALT br. and h, of the above, and then aged 27. He served in the Scotch and French wars and was sun. to Parl. as a Baron (LORD MONTALT) by writs from 6 Feb. (1298/9) 27 Ed. I. to 13 June (1329) 3 Ed. III. He was one of the Barons whose name (as "Robitus de Monte Alto, Dominus Hawar- dyn") appears to the famous letter() sent by them in 1301 to the Pope. Hem. Emina who was living (1237) 1 Ed. 111. in which year he, having no issue, granted the reversion (on his death) of his great estates f) to the Queen Mother for life and to her son John, afterwards Earl of Cornwall, in fee. Lan- Writ. caster, 5th s, of Thomas (STANLEY), 1st EARL OF DERBY, by his first I. 1514. wife, Eleanor, da, of Richard (NEVILL) EARL OF SALISBURY, having greatly distinguished himself when in command of the rear of tho English army at the victory of Florden,(5) 9 Sep. 1513, was el. K.G., (") The chief place of the residence of this family was "at a little hill in Flintshire then called Montalt, but of late time (vulgarly) Moulde." ["Dugdale."] (b) This Robert was 2d son but eventually (on the death of his br., John), heir to Roger de Moutalt (d. 1260) one of the most powerful of the Barons temp. Henry III., by Cicely, sister and coheir of Hugh (de Albini), Earl of Arundel, which Cicely brought considerable estates to the Montalt family.

(f) Besides the Lordships of Montalt, of Hawarden with the Stewardship of Chester, of Walton upon Trent, co. Derby, of Cheylesmore by Coventry, co. Warwick, these included the Manor of Kenninghall, the Castle of Rising, &c. and other estates in Norfolk and Suffolk derived from the family of Albini, Earls of Arundel.
(g) "As a reward for which service King Henry commanded [at Whitsuntide 1514] that in consideration of those his valiant acts against the Scots done in that battel, where he won the Hill, as also for that his ancestors bore the cayle in their crest he should be proclaimed Lord of Montaygle "[Dugdale]. Hence he was sum, as a Baron by that title a few months later.
