MARJORIBANKS OF LADYKIRK.
1. DAVID ROBERTSON of Ladykirk, co. Berwick, formerly DAVID MARJORIBANKS, 1th s. of Sir John MARJORIBANKS, Bart. (so cr. 1815), by Alison, da. of William RAMSAY, of Barutou in Midlothian, was b. 2 Aprli 1797; ed. at Edinburgh Univ. He m. 10 Sep. 1834, Marianne Sarah, 1st da. and coheir of Sir Thomas Haggerston, 6th Bart., by Margaret, only da. and h. of William Robertson, of Ladykirk afsd., and, a few days previous, took by Royal lic., 2 Sep. 1534, the name of Robertson in lieu of his patronymic of Marjoribanks. He was a merchant in London, was M.P. for Berwickshire, 1859-73, and Lord Lieut. of that county. He was cr. 12 June 1873, BARON MARJORIBANKS OF LADYKIRK, co. Berwick, but s.p.m.s. (only seven days afterwards), 19 June 1873, aged 76, in Upper Brook street, Midx., when the peerage became extinct.[1] His widow d. 19 Aug. 1889, at Ripley Castle. Personalty sworn over £34,000.
Family Estates.—These, in 1883, consisted of 6,832 acres in Berwickshire, valued at £11,754 a year. Principal Residence; Lulykirk, near Berwick.

1. JAMES LEY, 6th and yst. s. of Henry LEY, of Teffont-Ewyas, Wilts, by Dyouisia DE ST. MAYNE, was b. there 1552; ed. at Brasenose Coll., Oxford; B.A., 3 Feb. 1573/4; Barrister (Linc. Inn), 1584; M.P. for Westbury, 1597-98, 1604-05, and 1609-11; for Bath, 1614, and for Westbury (again 1621); was Justice of Carmarthen, Pembroke and Cardigan, June 1603; Knighted 8 Oct. 1603, at Wilton, Wilts; Serjeant at Law, Nov. 1603; Ch. Justice of the King's Bench [I.] 1603-08, being from April to Nov. 1605, a Commissioner of the Great Seal [I.] Returning to England, he was made Attorney of the Court of Wards, Nov. 1608, and was cr. a Baronet (as "of Westbury, Wilts") 20 July 1619; Ch. Justice of the King's Bench [E.] 1621-24. Speaker of the House of Lords, and Joint Commissioner of the Great Seal, May to July 1621; P.C., 1624: LORD HIGH TREASURER, 1624-28, being cr. 31 Dec 16:25, BARON LEY of Ley, co. Devon, and on 5 Feb. 1625/6,[2] EARL OF MARLBOROUGH, co. Wilts, with a spec. rem. to the heirs male of his body by Jane,[3] his then wife, whom failing to the heirs male of his body. He was Joint Commissioner for the claims at the Coronation of Charles I. in Jan. 1626, and was PRESIDENT OF THE Council, from July to Dec. 1628. He m. firstly, before 1595, Mary, 1st da. of John PETTIE, of Stoke Talmage, Oxon, by Elizabeth, da. and heir of Thomas, or Edward, SNAPE, of Fawler, near Wituey. By her he had 11 children. He m. secondly (Lic. London, 13 Feb. 1617/8), Mary, widow of Sir William BOWYER, of Deuham, Bucks, da. and coheir of Thomas PIERSON, Usber of the Court of the Star Chamber. By her he had no issue. He m. thirdly, 4 July 1621, Jane, 3d da. of John (BOTELER), 1st BARON BOTELER OF BRANTFIELD, by Elizabeth, sister (of the half blood) to George, DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, da. of Sir George VILLIERS.[4] He d. in Lincoln Inn, 14
