  1. வண்ணான் துறையில் முயல்போல.
    Like a hare at the washerman’s washing place.
  2. வண்ணானுக்குப் போனான் வண்ணாத்திக்கு வந்தான்.
    To the washerman, his name was “gone;” to the washer-woman, “come.”
    This proverb is explained as follows:—a washerman engaged a servant who gave his name as Pónán, he is gone. In the absence of her husband he told the washer-woman that his name was Vandán, he is come.
    The washerman wanting the man called him by name,-Pónáu. At the same moment the wife called the man by his other name Vandán. The washerman thereupon concluded that the servant had gone to his wife. Again he called as before, and his wife also called. As the servant did not come to him, the washerman became angry and went to his wife when an altercation took place. The matter being explained, they suspected that something was wrong, and soon found that the man had made off with their savings, and that he had given the two names to serve his secret purpose.
  3. வதுவை செய்து வாழ்.
    Get married and live prosperously.
  4. வஸ்திராபரணம் விசேஷமோ, அன்னம் விசேஷமோ?
    Which is more important, dress or food?
  5. வந்த காலோடு பந்தற் காலைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறாய்.
    Thou standest embracing the pillar of the pandal, having walked a long way.
  6. வந்த சண்டையை விடுவதும் இல்லை வலியச் சண்டைக்குப் போவதும் இல்லை
    The quarrel that has ensued is not relinquished, nor is another causelessly sought.
  7. வந்தவர் எல்லாம் சந்தையில் குடியா?
    Do all that come to market reside there?
