  1. எழுதுவது அருமை எழுதினதைப் பழுதற வாசிப்பது அருமை.
    Writing is important, reading correctly what is written, is more so.
  2. எழுதுகிறது பெரிது அல்ல, இனம் அறிந்து சேர்க்கிறது பெரிது.
    To be able to write is no great matter; to compose harmoniously is great.
  3. எழுத்து அறிந்த வண்ணான் குறித்து எறிந்தான் ஓலை.
    The washerman who had learnt his letters threw away his ola.
  4. எழுத்து அறிந்த மன்னன் கிழித்து எறிந்தான் ஓலையை.
    The king who had learnt his letters tore and threw away his ola. : It would appear that the two preceding proverbs relate to persons who suppose that ability to read supercedes all records.
  5. எழுத்துக்குப் பால்மாறின கணக்கனும் உடுக்கைக்குப் பால்மாறின தாசியும் வருத்தம் அடைவார்.
    The curnum who neglects his accounts, and the dancing girl who is careless about her dress, will come to grief.
  6. எழுந்திருப்பான் கால் இல்லை.
    He would rise, but he has no feet.
  7. எழுபது சென்றாலும் பறை ஏவினாற்றான் செய்யும்.
    Though seventy years old, a Pariah will do nothing unless he is prompted.
  8. எழுபது பேரைக் கொன்ற படுநீலி.
    A cruel Níli-woman-who killed seventy persons.
  9. ஏழைக்கும் பேழைக்கும் காடுகாள் அம்மை.
    The mother of Vairavi is the patroness of the poor and of boats.
  10. எளியவள் பிள்ளை ஆனாலும் செய்யும் சடங்கு செய்யவேண்டும்.
    Though the child of a poor woman, the accustomed rites must be performed.
