PUMPKIN TIME

BY EDITH MALLERY

Now the autumn leaves are falling
And the chilling breezes blow,
And the clouds that sail above us
Tell of ice and sleet and snow;
Yet the children all are happy,
Singing many a cheery rhyme,—
Need you ask of me the reason?
Boys and girls, 't is pumpkin time!

Here they come with song and laughter,
Merry elves with face aglow!
Each one, from small, chubby fingers,
Swings a pumpkin to and fro.
As you look across the corn-field,
Smiling fairies may be seen;—
Need you ask of me the reason?
Boys and girls, 't is Hallowe'en!
