INTRODUCTION.

Heaven on account of his death, and Frea[1], the Goddess of Beauty, peculiarly afflicted by the loss of her lover, resolved to undertake a journey to his gloomy habitation, in hopes of obtaining his release. This descent of Frea, and the success which attended it, are the subjects of the following Masque.

  1. ↑ Hermod, or Herman, is the person supposed to have descended in search of Balder, but some license will be granted to poetical compositions.
