I RETURNED from Paris in the middle of June 1852, having studied less than five months there, but made good use of that short time and was fairly industrious. Meanwhile my father had emigrated to Australia in the hope of retrieving his fallen fortunes. I found my mother and three brothers living in the upper part of a house in John Street, Bedford Row.
