the inferior man shall instinctively reproach himself rather than his Maker, whereby his good deeds and wise accomplishments may, through the same sense of independence from God, redound to his personal pride and exultation, while through this life arid the lives to come God carries on the infinite system wherein both the crime and the penalty were equally just, expedient, and necessary for the greatest good of every living creature: and that while justice and expediency are one, the justice of men is born .of fear and weakness, while God's justice is born of love and power.

We must distinguish between Right temporal, founded upon special law, and Right eternal, whereby law, the breach of law, and its penalty, as well as all other acts and things, are within the policy of the best eternal system. Crime, breaking the temporal law, is not right when judged thereby: and man under that law finds his duty still before him, and finds that the way of the transgressor is hard: though it needs be that offences come, yet wo unto the man by whom the offence cometh, temporally considered—more properly, in its immediate results. But eternal right, whereof is the righteousness of God, is above all law and punishment, of which it is the author, and is founded on eternal benevolence, working against eternal necessity, for the harmony of the universe. In the eye of this eternal right, the law and its violation are one, being equally good. Great is the law; but man is greater than all law, and dearer to the heart of the Almighty, who makes it apparently the temporal master, only that it may be
