naught from this earth save what is given them by men as alms; and this is the reason that the friends of the deceased put food before the speckled crows for the first nine days after his death, so that if the soul of the departed hath become a devil, nevertheless he may come and eat. According to their belief, these also come sometimes among men in human guise; but since they can do no harm, therefore they say that none need fear them.
