mental gifts, and the people exalt their fame and render them universal homage. This is the reason of their devoting themselves to their studies with ardour and resolution, without any sense of fatigue. They seek to acquire a knowledge of the sciences and go to visit the man who has attained it, not taking the distance of one thousand li into account. Although their family may be possessed of large wealth, they nevertheless prefer to live like mendicants and to get their food by begging as they wander to and fro.
