Gilbert de Welton or Wilton, 24th May 1353. The King restored the temporalties to him 26th June following[2]. He died at the close of the year 1362, and was buried in Carlisle cathedral. On 1st Jan. 1362—3 the prior and convent of Carlisle inform the King of the death of Gilbert de Welton their bishop, and pray that a congé d{élire may be issued[3]. A license accordingly issued i8th Jan. 1362-3[4]; notwithstanding which,

Thomas de Appleby, a canon of Carlisle, was provided to this see by the Pope; and having done fealty to the King, his majesty restored the temporalities to him 10th Aug. 1363[5]. He died 5th Dec. 1395. The congé d'élire, vice bishop Appleby, issued 30th Dec. 1395[6], and

William Strickland was chosen by the prior and convent, but the Pope quashed the election, and

1396 19 Ric. II.

Robert Reade, bishop of Waterford and Lisuwre, was translated to Carlisle by papal prevision, and the temporalities of the see were restored to him 30th March 1396[7]. In October in that year he was translated to Chichester[8].

1397 20 Ric. II.

Thomas Merkes[9], S.T. Magister, a monk of Westminster, was provided to this see by papal bull, and obtained restitution of the temporalities 18th March 1397—8[10]. He made his profession of obedience 19th Oct. 1398, and was deprived by king Henry IV for high treason, as an adherent to the deposed king,
