1584 26 Eliz.

THOMAS COWPER, bishop of Lincoln, was elected to this see 12th March 1583-4, and confirmed on the 23rd of the same month[1]. He died 29th April 1594, and was buried in his own cathedral[2]. His will, dated 16th Jan. 1593-4, was proved 9th May 1594[3]. The license to elect a bishop in the room of bishop Cowper is dated 29th Dec. 1594[4].

1595 36 Eliz. WILLIAM WYKEHAM, bishop of Lincoln, was elected to this see 7th Jan. 1594-5, had the royal assent 12th Feb.[5], and the temporalities were restored 14th March[6]. He was confirmed 22nd Feb. He died 11th June 1595, and was buried in the church of St. Saviour, Southwark.

1595 37 Eliz. WILLIAM DAY, S.T.P., dean of Windsor, was elected 3rd Nov. 1595, confirmed 22nd Jan. 1595-6, and consecrated at Lambeth on the 25th of the same month[7]. He died 20th Sept. 1596.

1597 39 Eliz. THOMAS BILSON, bishop of Worcester, was elected to this see 29th April 1597, confirmed 13th May following [8]. He died 18th June 1616, ætat. 69, and was buried in Westminster Abbey [9].


1616 14 Jac. I. JAMES MONTAGUE, bishop of Bath and Wells, was elected to this see 26th June 1616, and confirmed 4th Oct[10]. He died at Greenwich 20th July 1618, ætat. 50[11], and was buried at Bath. The congé d'élire for his successor is dated 29th July 1618[12].
