death is uncertain; it has been placed 22nd Dec. (xi Cal. Jan.) 1187, 21st Dec. 1188, 22nd Jan. 1188, and in his epitaph in 1189.

GODFREY LUCY, dean of St. Martin's, London, archdeacon of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and archdeacon of Derby, was nominated by the King at Pipewell 15th Sept. 118979, and consecrated 22nd Oct. following: in St. Katharine's chapel, Westminster. He died in 1204[1].

SIR PIERRE DES ROCHES, knight, or PETER DE RUPIBUS[2], as he is now commonly called, was appointed to the bishopric of Winchester by papal provision, and consecrated at Rome 25th Sept. (vii Cal. Octob.) 1205[3]. He obtained the temporalities 24th March 1206[4], and was installed on the 26th of the same month, Palm Sunday. He died at Farnham 9th June (v Id. Junii) 1238[5], and was buried in Winchester cathedral[6]. On 11th June 1238 the custody of the bishopric was granted to Paul Peyvre and Thomas de Newerk[7], and 11th July following a license was issued to the prior and chapter of Winchester to elect a bishop in the room of Pierre des Roches, de- ceased[8]; but owing to a misunderstanding between the King and the monks, no election took place 89 for five years at least.
