Note to the Fourth Edition.

This edition of the Cantonese Dictionary has been carefully revised throughout: and fully one third has been added to its size.

The common characters 唔 ’m, 嘅 ke`, and 冇 mo´, which are unauthorized and local, have been in most cases replaced by their classic equivalents, 不, 之, and 無 while the colloquial sounds have been retained.

Expressions wholly put in parentheses are not colloquial; but single syllables in parentheses are more colloquial forms of those that they immediately follow. Thus, under “About” will be fonnd “tseung-kan` (k‘an´);” where “tseung-k‘an´” is the more colloquial.

Adjectives may be formed at pleasure by adding “ke`” to nouns and verbs.

Verbs may also be often formed by placing “cheng´” or “tso`” before adjectives, as “cheng´-paak,” “to whiten.”
