Czechoslovak Flashes.
Bratislava to Get New Theater.
A second Slovak theatre, which will cost 4,500,000 Crowns, is to be erected in Bratislava during the course of this year. The present National Theatre in Bratislava is to be given over to the production of classical operettas.
Frank Úprka, renowned sculptor of Slovak life and brother of the Slovak artist, Joža Úprka, celebrated his sixtieth birthday on February 24th.
“Bartered Bride” in the Metropolitan Opera.
For the first time in the history of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Czech singing was heard there last month when the Bartered Bride, with the renowned bass singer, Ludikar, starring in the role of Kecal, was produced. Ludikar appeared again in the Metropolitan Opera on March 10th, as Kambald in Puccini’s Le Rondine.
Mr. J. E. Chapek in Violin Recital.
Mr. Joseph E. Chapek, American composer and violinist of Czech ancestry, gave a violin recital at the Kimball Hall, Chicago, on March 28th. He displayed remarkable ability and technique.
Bohuslav Martinů, Modern Czech Composer.
The Concerto of Martinů was produced lately in Paris by Gabriel Piere with great success. Other of his compositions met with success not only in Prague, but also in Brno, Berlin, London, Frankfurt, New York, and Chicago. His ballet compositions are very popular. Martinů belongs to the modern composers.
Memorial to Spanish-American Soldiers.
A beautiful statue will stand near Columbus, Ohio in memory of the soldiers who fell in the Spanish-American War. The memorial is the work of a Czech sculptor, František Jirouch, now residing in America.
