JARENUS, second half of 15th century.
German school. This name was first suggested
by Passavant, who probably read as
Jarenus the fragment of the inscription Jesus
Nazarenus on a Pietà at Wilton House. The
Soest triptych at Berlin shows the growing
influence of the Flemish school. Works:
Triptych, with Scenes from the Passion,
Berlin Museum; The two wings of this are

JARVIS, JOHN WESLEY, born at South
Shields-on-the-Tyne, England, in 1780.
Brought to Philadelphia by his father in
1785. Portrait painter, chiefly self-taught;
one of the earliest of American painters to
attend to the study of anatomy. Painted
in New York and the chief Southern cities,
where his portraits were very popular.
