The commonest chemical substances introduced into the vagina are:—

  1. Quinine compounds in a variety of forms (see p. 104).
    1. As a powder (see p. 104).
    2. As ointment on a sponge, plug, cap, or merely rubbed round the cervix (see p. 105).
    3. In a pessary or suppository contained in a matrix of low melting point wax, such as cocoa butter, or gelatine (see p. 105).
    4. Dissolved in or mixed with oil which is injected by a small specially constructed syringe (see p. 113).
    5. Various suppositories (see p. 114).
  2. Alum in powdered form (see p. 114).
  3. Common salt in solution as a douche (see p. 119).
  4. Vinegar and water, or lactic acid, &c., as a douche (see p. 119).
