and if we deceived ourselves, our error was, at least, complete. They persevered in it to the grave ; and for my own part, after subsequent long reflection, I re- main convinced that that equality which they che- rished, is the only institution proper for conciliating all real wants, for directing the useful passions, restraining the dangerous ones, and giving to society a free, happy, peaceful and durable form.
