Image missingFig. 103.Baleen Implements of unknown Use. Comers Midden. have formed a similar mat, as well as two smaller fragments; only one of these latter is from layer C, the rest from D.

Objects of Doubtful Use.

A peculiar implement, which has not been met with in the excavations previously referred to nor in any other place in the Eskiskimo territory, will be seen on fig. 103; a (L 7643) is a long, narrow strip of baleen, 123 cm long; the breadth is 1.3 cm, but at one end the specimen has a head, 2.5 cm wide; in this head has been cut an oblong hole, in which is a ring of baleen cord; the specimen, which consists of two strips laid together, is broken off at the other end. b (L 7645 a) is a similar implement, but heavier; the length is 70 cm; the head is not clearly cut, but the breadth widens gradually up to it; the hole is oval and the ring bigger; below the hole there is a notch at each side, holding a binding of baleen cord. The other end is broken, but c (L 7645 b), which was found with it, is apparently this broken-off end; the length is 28½ cm; it terminates in a large, triangular eye, one side of which is broken, however.

Pl. 79.10 (L 7711) is possibly of the same group; the breadth is the same throughout; near the end a pair of notches holding a binding of baleen cord; behind this are three holes in a longitudinal row and, in the centre one, are the remnants of a ring; the other end is broken off.

There are still four specimens which seem to be of similar implements; two of them have a broad head with a hole, the other two are
