a number of pieces of flint, a few strips of baleen and about 1100 animal bones. The samples taken comprises, according to M. A. Degerbøl's classification: Dog 2, fox 9, bear 3, caribou 1, white whale 3, walrus 5, bladder-nose seal (?) 1, small seal 22, goose 1, other birds 3, salmon trout 4.
House ruin XVIII. Very much disturbed. The turf removed, stones and whale bones taken away. Has had two platforms; total length 6.6 m, breadth 3.3 m; the doorway, facing NE., 3.8 m long, 0.6 m broad. During excavation, which was made very summarily owing to the disturbed state of the house, several platform stones; placed on edge, were uncovered.
In this house were found: A fragment of a side prong for a salmon spear, of whalebone, the usual form with three pairs of holes for the lashing of the barbs. A broken triangular flint blade, 3.1 cm long. A whetting stone of mica slate. A fragment of a small lamp of natural, hollowed lime-stone (like Pl. 67.11). A small, oblong, toy cooking pot of ivory, 3.6 cm long. A meat fork of the same type as that mentioned under house ruin VIII, 23 cm long. A comb of bone, 7.8 cm long, of which the teeth only measure 1.7 cm; the breadth is greatest, 2.9 cm, at the top, it being 2.8 cm at the bottom, while at one point between these two it is only 2.1 cm; along the upper edge is a projecting ledge. An ornamented bird figure of ivory, the head broken off.
Pl. 72.8 (P4. 236) is a flat implement of ivory with a sharp edge at the bottom; the two wings at the top are a pattern with which we are very familiar from combs from Southampton Island.[1] Presumably it has been used for a similar purpose to Pl. 69.8. A heavy board of whalebone, 35 × 7 × 2½ cm, pierced by 6 large holes, is possibly a piece of a sledge runner, but there are no marks of wear on it. In this ruin there were also found nine indeterminable bone objects, including a hexagonal plate of whalebone, 7.1 cm long, with a round central hole, a worked piece of wood, a few pieces of flint, a piece of stone like soapstone, and 335 animal bones.
House ruin XIX. Entirely destroyed. Has had two platforms; doorway facing NNE. Was roughly dug over, the following specimens being found:
An unfinished harpoon head of antler, 9 cm long, of the later, flat type Pl. 67.2. A broken harpoon blade of ivory. A very blunt ice pick of whalebone, 9.2 cm long. A broken bone blade, ornamented with a Y-line. An arrow head of antler, cut over at the fore end, a scarf face at the rear end. The drilled-off, very thin edge of a snow knife blade, 9½ cm long. A fragment of a whittling knife of the type
