0.4 m wide, led to the E. The house was almost completely levelled and obviously old; only in the upper part of the doorway did the edge-on lime-stones, which formed its walls, appear above the turf. On excavation there appeared a number of stones on edge which bounded a square space in the middle of the house, presumably the floor, and it was only here that a little soiled culture earth was found, up to 30 cm thick, in which nearly all the specimens were discovered. Outside the row of stones only barren lime gravel was found under the turf.
In this house were found: the broken fore end of a foreshaft for a harpoon, of antler; a small broken ice pick of ivory, almost the whole surface covered with notches. A triangular flint blade, 3.2 cm long, is presumably for a harpoon or a lance. The end of a toy bow of wood, 1.4 cm broad, defective; 2 arrow heads of antler without barbs, one with a fairly broad blade, the shaft end broken, the other 17 cm long, with narrow blade, truncated cone-shaped shaft end and a hole in front of this; this may, however, originate from a later use as a trout needle. A leister prong, the middle point of a salmon spear or the like, antler, 13.2 cm long, two very small barbs on each side at the point. A set of side prongs for a salmon spear with the appurtenant barbs, all found close together; both side prongs and barbs differ from the usual form (see Pl. 71.3) in that the holes for the lashing, 2 in each part, are not round and formed by drilling, but oblong, like slots, formed by cutting; the length of the side prongs is 30 and 29 cm respectively, that of the barbs 7.7 and 7.3 cm; they are all of whalebone. Another, broken, side prong for a salmon spear of the usual type, with one round hole in the fore end, and an unfinished barb of ivory without the usual bent-over neck end.
A small fragment of a snow knife blade, of ivory; a fragment of a snow shovel of antler, the handle 9 cm long, 3.6 wide, expanding suddenly into the blade, most of which is broken off. A slender knife handle of whalebone, 21½ cm long, a blade slit, 3.7 cm long, in one edge near the point; the grip, 9 cm long, is slightly narrow and furnished with notches; on the end a unilateral knob and an elongated hole. A handle of whalebone, 13 cm long, 2.9 cm wide at the fore end, fairly pointed at the other, in which is a slot-like hole, is apparently of a knife too; the whole surface is covered with close, parallel scratches, which give a better grip. A broken adze head of antler, on which the shaft lashing has passed through four vertical holes. A piece of a heavy mattock of whale rib like Naujan Pl. 21.5. A small wedge of antler. An ulo handle like Naujan Pl. 24.3, but heavier, without rivet holes, 9.3 cm long, 7.4 broad, of whalebone. A small
