the surrounding country; to the SE. it reaches the foot of the high plateau. On the lowest terrain, about one metre above the sea, are 5 autumn houses (XVIII–XXII), built into the right, sandy brink of the stream, their entrances facing the stream; a few whale skulls have been used in the walls; diagonally opposite, on the left bank, one autumn house. These autumn houses do not seem to have been built upon the sites of old house ruins; the walls barely reach up above the surrounding terrain and they are built rather roughly and with little care, as such temporary houses most often are; there does not seem to be any old refuse round about. On the second terrace, 5 metres above sea level, on the left bank of the stream, are two house ruins, both very levelled out and overgrown; one, XVI, appears as a circular hollow, 5 metres in diameter, from which one whalebone protrudes; the entrance faces N.;, the other, with its entrance facing SW., is very indistinct, with several whalebones and large stones sticking out. Just by the left bank, a little higher up the stream and at a similar height above the sea, is a very flattened out house ruin from which numbers of stones project; the entrance is towards the SW.; the rear of the house is cut away by the stream. On the corresponding terrace, 6 metres above sea level, on the right bank are 3 autumn houses, XII–XIV, built upon the sites of old house ruins.
On the third terrace, 8–10 metres above sea level, on the right bank, are 11 house ruins, most of them near the edge of the plateau, although two of them jut into the flat terrain. I and III are old, very flattened out house ruins, about 4½ metres in diameter, with entrances facing W., built into the edge of the terrace; II is an old, very flattened out house ruin, round, 5 metres in diameter, with entrance facing S. IV–VI are autumn houses, fairly new, built on old house ruins; outside the entrance to IV are quantities of fairly recent bones, broken glass, etc.; several whale skulls in the walls. V has 6. and VI 4 whale skulls in the walls; they both give the impression of being fairly new, with walls, platform and entrance preserved. VII is an old, very levelled out house ruin, 5 metres in diameter, with entrance facing SW.; VIII is an old, completely levelled house ruin, 5 metres in diameter, with entrance facing SW. IX and X are autumn houses presumably erected on the sites of old house ruins; no whale skulls in the walls. XI is an old house ruin, 5–6 metres in diameter; it seems to have had three platforms and an entrance facing S. Just by the right bank, higher up the stream, is a more recent autumn house dug into the bank (XXIII); near it is a child's grave.
Besides these house ruins and qarmat there are at Qilalukan a number of other remains of habitation, most of them doubtless of later date; at the edge of the point there are several newer tent rings
