it was visible merely as an oval, very low earth-mound, 7.3 and 5.7 in diameter, in which was a flat hollow; the doorway could be seen in the form of a hollow, commencing about the middle of one long side and running westwards; only one or two large stones projected through the turf and no whale bones were observed. After excavating
about 60 cm of soil, the bottom under the house, of gravel, was reached. Fig. 41 is a plan of the house. There is not much of the original arrangement left; in one or two places near the walls were found large quantities of Cassiope, presumably used on the platforms; 8 large pieces of whale jaw-bone had been placed on end and have presumably served as supports for the roofing. A large portion of the central part of the house had a flooring of flat stones over the gravel bottom, and in several places here the ground was filled with blubber. In the layer of earth excavated were also found some large stones and 28 large pieces of whale bone, jaw-bones and ribs
