PUBLISHER’S NOTE

The German original of Old-New Land was published under the title of “Altneuland” in 1902, about two years before the untimely death of Theodor Herzl. Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian translations appeared within some years thereafter, but the novel has hitherto been available to English readers only in incomplete serial versions published in American Zionist periodicals. The publishers therefore feel it a privilege to be able to present the first full English translation of this famous work by the founder of political Zionism now that so many of his visions have been either wholly or partly fulfilled.

The footnotes are intended to furnish a succinct notion of the actual developments as compared with Dr. Herzl’s forecasts. While many of these forecasts have come to pass, much more has been accomplished since this translation was made. The notes were prepared originally by Miss Levensohn to accompany the text of her abridged serial translation in the “New Palestine Magazine,” to which thanks are due for its kind permission to use them for this book as well as for the use of the translator’s introduction, which appears in this volume in somewhat revised form.
