European Elegies/Winter/Three springs

57.THREE SPRINGS

In this terrestrial wilderness, three springs
Gush forth mysterious in the boundless gray;

The spring of youth, with passioned murmurings,
Sparkles and boils on its rebellious way;

The spring of poesy exalts the blood
Of wanderers in life's desert sands apart;

But chill oblivion's spring in soothing flood
Alone can cool the fever of the heart.

From the Russian of Alexandr Sergeevich Pushkin.
