European Elegies/Spring/Morning

69.MORNING

From wide, star-woven curtains
The heavens are released,
And the flusht dawn flings open
The portals of the east.

Forest and vale are flooded
With birds' melodious chant,
And mountains echoes answer
In songs exuberant.

Fair as for birth or bridal,
All nature breathes with bloom—
And man takes blindly onward
One step more towards the tomb,

From the Rhaetoromanic of Gian Fadri Caderas.
