Mr. Sutherland

The poem "The Thistle of Scotland" was first published in James Hogg's collection Jacobite Relics (1819-1821). In this collection, Hogg claimed that the poem's author was a "Mr. Sutherland, land-surveyor, a gentleman of whom I know nothing, save that he is the author of some other popular songs."

Alexander Whitelaw, in The Book of Scottish Song (1843), casts doubt on Hogg's statement, suggesting that "Mr. Sutherland" may be a pseudonym of Hogg himself.
