Joseph William Winthrop Spencer

Pioneer Canadian geomorphologist, known for his studies of glacial, proglacial lakes, and preglacial drainage systems in the Great Lakes. He taught at Hamilton Collegiate Institute (1877–1880); King's College, Nova Scotia (1880–1882); University of Missouri (1882–1888; he was professor and director of the Museum of Natural History); and University of Georgia (1888–1893; he was also appointed to the State Geological Survey). After this he became a consultant geologist in Washington, D.C., but returned to Canada shortly before his death in 1921.
